Fatal Accident on Freeway 5 Portland Oregón

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) - A massive pile up kept Interstate 5 southbound closed for several hours Friday morning.
Portland Police had to close I-5 at the Interstate 84 southbound entrance to prevent more crashes, as about 50 vehicles became involved in a pile up near Capital Highway in the southbound lanes.
“We don’t get that really that often in Oregon, the 50 car pile-up. Especially with the weather, but ice, it’s going to do it to any vehicle,” said commuter Jake Dent.
KATU News viewer Hector Lucas captured a cringe-worthy live video of the crash, one car crashing into another. In the video, you can hear Lucas warn from afar over and over, powerless: "No, no, no."

Portland Fire said the injuries for those involved were all minor.
“At least they are just minor,” said Dent. “You know, nothing serious, hopefully, and all the people are doing okay and can make it home safely today.”
While I-5 was closed down by Capital Highway, local businesses suffered.
On what is supposed to be its busiest day, employees at Black Rock Coffee said it lost 86 percent of its sales from the freezing rain storm.

“Usually we will have about 3-4 cars even waiting for us when we get here. The ice kind of impacted that a little bit,” said employee Ashley Dalsior.
Dalsior said this year’s storms have taken a toll on her, and Friday’s wrecks proved it.
“It is scary,” she said. “Our roadways are just icy and, yeah, you are just slipping and sliding around. You never know what can happen. Once the car kind of goes, it goes.”

Cleaning up all those cars and semis was the Oregon Department of Transportation’s muscle machine: The Grader. It took a little over five hours to get the massive pile up cleared.
